With the Turbo 2 transmission losing 4th gear some time ago, I decided it was time to upgrade. The Cd0009 is a valid option for many, but not for me. I decided on the ZF S5D-320Z from a BMW 328i E36 after hearing many god things about them. Luckily I found one locally to me for a mere $250.
Next up was finding an adapter kit. I had recently found Adamat Performance in Poland and sent them a message about what I was working on. They had told me that they had just finished designing the kit for the 1.6 and it would be available in just a couple weeks (they already offered a 1.8 kit). I placed an order for the kit and it showed up in a couple weeks. The kit consists of the adapter plate, custom flywheel, twin disk clutch, and all associated hardware.
I decided on a few parts for this:
Adamat Performance 1.6 to ZF adapter kit
OEM ZF detent upgrade kit
OEM shift rod joint
OEM release fork
OEM release bearing retainer
Stainless steel clutch pivot
KMiata driveshaft flange
TF Works shifter
The ZF transmission is quite a bit bigger than the T2 transmission, but it wasn’t much concern for me. Luckily back when George owned the car, it was LS and T56, so the tunnel fitment was already done for me.
